Clinton Summary

Clinton, Pennsylvania is a borough located in the center of Clinton County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the north-central part of the state, approximately 20 miles east of Lock Haven and 30 miles west of Williamsport. The population of Clinton was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Clinton was first settled in 1790 by a group of settlers from New Jersey. The town was originally known as "Clintonville" and was named after the first settler, William Clinton. The town was incorporated in 1837 and was officially renamed "Clinton" in 1845.
The town was an important stop on the Pennsylvania Canal, which ran through the town from 1834 to 1871. The canal was a major transportation route for goods and people, and it helped to spur the growth of the town.

Geography

Clinton is located at 41°7'25" North, 77°14'25" West (41.123611, -77.240278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Clinton is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The town also has a small industrial park, which is home to several small manufacturing companies.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,621.4 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,145.7 per square mile (443.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $33,750, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
