Claysburg Summary

Claysburg is a borough located in Blair County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Altoona, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Claysburg was founded in 1845 by John Clay, a local landowner. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1876. The town was originally a farming community, but it has since become a bedroom community for nearby Altoona.

Geography

Claysburg is located at 40°17'45" North, 78°30'45" West (40.295833, -78.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Claysburg is primarily a bedroom community for Altoona, and as such, most of its residents commute to Altoona for work. The town does have a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 315 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 651.2 per square mile (251.7/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
