Clarks Summit borough Summary
Clarks Summit Borough is a borough located in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. It is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre–Hazleton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,116 at the 2010 census.
History
Clarks Summit was founded in 1838 by William and Abigail Clark, who purchased a tract of land from the Susquehanna Company. The Clarks built a log cabin and began to clear the land for farming. The Clarks named the area Clarks Summit after their family name. The area was originally part of the town of South Abington Township, but was incorporated as a borough in 1891.
Geography
Clarks Summit is located at 41°31'17" North, 75°40'45" West (41.5214, -75.6791). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Clarks Summit is home to several businesses, including a variety of restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The borough is also home to several medical facilities, including the Commonwealth Health Regional Hospital of Scranton and the Abington Manor Nursing Home.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 5,072 people, 2,093 households, and 1,346 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,093.3 people per square mile (1,581.2/km2). There were 2,213 housing units at an average density of 1,788.3 per square mile (692.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.90% White, 0.78% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.86% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 31.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 22.9% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $51,944. Males had a median income of $36,944 versus $25,944 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,944. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
