Bethel Summary

Bethel, Pennsylvania is a small borough located in Berks County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the county, approximately 10 miles south of the city of Reading. The borough is bordered by Union Township to the north, Richmond Township to the east, and Oley Township to the south and west. According to the 2010 census, the population of Bethel was 1,817.

History

The area that is now Bethel was first settled in the early 1700s by German immigrants. The first settlers were members of the Mennonite and Schwenkfelder denominations. The town was originally known as “Mennonite Town” and was later renamed Bethel, after the biblical city of Bethel. The town was officially incorporated in 1845.

Geography

Bethel is located at 40°20'N 75°51'W (40.33, -75.85). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Bethel is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including the Bethel Valley Farm, which produces a variety of fruits and vegetables. The town is also home to several small businesses, including a hardware store, a bakery, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,817 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,619.3 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,164.3 per square mile (449.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $20,845. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
