Belleville Summary

Belleville is a small borough located in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the Juniata River Valley, approximately 10 miles south of Lewistown. The population of Belleville was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Belleville is located at 40°37'45" North, 77°37'45" West (40.629, -77.629). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

History

Belleville was founded in 1817 by John and Mary Bell. The town was named after the Bells, who were the first settlers in the area. The town was originally known as Bellsville, but the name was changed to Belleville in 1820.
The town was incorporated in 1845 and was the first borough in Mifflin County. The first post office was established in 1846.

Economy

Belleville is a small, rural community with a limited economy. The main industries in the area are agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a few small shops.
The town is also home to a few small manufacturing companies, including a furniture manufacturer and a metal fabrication company.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,072.2 people per square mile (1,186.3/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 1,346.7 per square mile (520.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
