Bainbridge Summary

Bainbridge is a small borough located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the county, approximately 10 miles south of the city of Lancaster. The borough is bordered by East Donegal Township to the north, West Donegal Township to the east, Conoy Township to the south, and Providence Township to the west. The population of Bainbridge was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Bainbridge was first settled in the early 1700s by German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Bainbridge’s Crossroads”, named after the local tavern keeper, John Bainbridge. The town was officially incorporated in 1845.
In the late 1800s, the town was a major hub for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The railroad brought many new businesses to the area, including a brickyard, a flour mill, and a sawmill. The railroad also brought many new residents to the area, and the population of Bainbridge grew rapidly.

Geography

Bainbridge is located at 40°7′17″N 76°17′17″W (40.1214, -76.2881). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Bainbridge is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including dairy farms, vegetable farms, and fruit farms. The town is also home to several small businesses, including a hardware store, a grocery store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,621.4 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 1,150.7 per square mile (444.3/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
