Allenport Summary

Alexanderport is a borough located in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Alexanderport was founded in 1836 by Alexander McLean, a Scottish immigrant. The town was originally known as McLeansburg, but the name was changed to Alexanderport in 1854. The town was incorporated in 1872.
Alexanderport was a major center of the coal mining industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town was home to several coal mines, including the Alexanderport Mine, which operated from 1872 to 1923.

Economy

Alexanderport's economy is largely based on the coal mining industry. The town is home to several coal mines, including the Alexanderport Mine, which operated from 1872 to 1923.
The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 305 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,817.3 people per square mile (701.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 776.3 per square mile (299.7/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $14,000.
