Westphalia Summary
Westphalia is a small village located in Clinton County, Michigan, United States. The village is situated in the center of the county, approximately 8 miles east of the county seat of St. Johns. The population of Westphalia was 1,072 at the 2010 census.
History
Westphalia was founded in 1837 by German immigrants from the Westphalia region of Germany. The village was originally named Westfallen, but the name was changed to Westphalia in 1845. The village was incorporated in 1871.
Westphalia was a farming community for many years, but in the late 19th century, the village began to develop into a manufacturing center. The first industry in the village was a sawmill, which was established in 1876. Other industries followed, including a grist mill, a brickyard, a furniture factory, and a canning factory.

Westphalia is located at 42°59'45"N 84°37'45"W (42.995833, -84.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.

Westphalia’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bank. The village also has a post office and a library.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,072 people, 431 households, and 287 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,179.3 people per square mile (454.7/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 507.2 per square mile (195.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
