Wayne Summary

Wayne, Michigan is a city located in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. It is located about 15 miles west of Detroit and is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 17,593.

History

The area that is now Wayne was first settled in 1824 by George M. Johnson, who purchased land from the government and built a log cabin. The area was originally known as Johnson's Settlement, and was later renamed Wayne after General Anthony Wayne. The village of Wayne was incorporated in 1869, and the city was incorporated in 1960.

Geography

Wayne is located at 42°14′N 83°13′W (42.23, -83.21). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.50 square miles (11.67 km2), all land.

Economy

Wayne is home to several large employers, including the Ford Motor Company, which has a large assembly plant in the city. Other major employers include the Wayne-Westland School District, the City of Wayne, and the Wayne County government.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 17,593 people, 6,945 households, and 4,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,912.3 people per square mile (1,509.3/km2). There were 7,541 housing units at an average density of 1,668.2 per square mile (644.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 14.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 6,945 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 16.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,902, and the median income for a family was $54,890. Males had a median income of $41,890 versus $30,890 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,890. About 8.2% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.
