Wakefield Summary

Wakefield is a city located in Gogebic County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gogebic County.

History

The area that is now Wakefield was first settled in 1885 by a group of Finnish immigrants. The town was originally called "Finlandia" and was later renamed Wakefield in honor of the Wakefield family, who were prominent in the area. The Wakefield family owned a large amount of land in the area and were instrumental in the development of the town.

The first post office in Wakefield was established in 1887 The town was incorporated in 1895

Geography

Wakefield is located at 46°29′N 89°37′W (46.48, -89.62). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

Wakefield's economy is largely based on tourism and the timber industry. The city is home to several resorts and campgrounds, as well as a number of logging and lumber companies. The city is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,876 people, 817 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 845.5 people per square mile (326.2/km2). There were 945 housing units at an average density of 427.3 per square mile (164.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 817 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% were non-families. 35.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845.
