Wacousta Summary

Wacousta is a small unincorporated community located in Shiawassee County, Michigan. It is situated on the Shiawassee River, approximately 8 miles east of the city of Lansing. The population of Wacousta was estimated to be around 1,000 in 2000.

History

The area that is now Wacousta was first settled in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The settlement was originally known as “New York Settlement”, but was later renamed Wacousta after a local Native American chief. The name Wacousta is derived from the Ojibwe word “wakos”, which means “bend” or “curve”.
The first post office in Wacousta was established in 1837. The village was incorporated in 1867, and the first mayor was elected in 1868.

Geography

Wacousta is located in Shiawassee County, Michigan. It is situated on the Shiawassee River, approximately 8 miles east of the city of Lansing. The village is located in the Shiawassee River Valley, which is a part of the larger Saginaw Valley.
The terrain of Wacousta is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The village is surrounded by farmland and woodlands. The climate is humid continental, with hot summers and cold winters.
