Ubly Summary
Ubly is a village located in Huron County, Michigan. It is situated in the Thumb region of the state, and is part of the Bad Axe Micropolitan Statistical Area. The village has a population of 1,092 as of the 2010 census.
Geography
Ubly is located at 43°59'25" North, 82°59'45" West (43.9903, -82.9958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
History
Ubly was founded in 1881 by German immigrants who had come to the area to work in the lumber industry. The village was named after the German word for “humble”, and was incorporated in 1887.
The village was a major center for the lumber industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The lumber industry declined in the 1920s, and the village shifted its focus to agriculture.
Economy
Ubly’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including dairy farms, vegetable farms, and fruit farms. The village also has a few small businesses, including a hardware store, a grocery store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,092 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 902.7 people per square mile (348.7/km2). There were 476 housing units at an average density of 393.3 per square mile (151.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.9% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $32,500 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
