Taylor Summary

Taylor is a city located in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 63,131 at the 2010 census. Taylor is the 17th most populous city in Michigan and the 551st most populous city in the United States. It is a suburb of Detroit, located approximately 15 miles (24 km) southwest of the city.

History

The area that is now Taylor was originally inhabited by the Potawatomi Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1816, and the area was first known as Taylor Township. The township was named after Colonel Zachary Taylor, who later became the 12th President of the United States.
In 1847, the township was divided into two parts, the northern part becoming Redford Township and the southern part becoming Taylor Township. In the late 19th century, the area began to develop as a farming community. In 1891, the village of Taylor was incorporated, and in 1959, the village was incorporated as a city.

Geography

Taylor is located at 42°14′N 83°15′W (42.23, -83.25). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.2 square miles (54.8 km2), of which 21.1 square miles (54.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (0.48%) is water.

Economy

Taylor is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is home to several large employers, including Ford Motor Company, which has a large manufacturing plant in the city. Other major employers include Taylor School District, Taylor Regional Medical Center, and the City of Taylor.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 63,131 people, 24,717 households, and 16,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,976.3 people per square mile (1,150.2/km2). There were 26,822 housing units at an average density of 1,269.2 per square mile (490.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 14.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 24,717 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,902, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,890 versus $30,890 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,945. About 6.7% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
