Sterling, Michigan is a small village located in Arenac County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is situated on the banks of the Au Gres River, approximately 20 miles east of Bay City. The village has a population of approximately 1,000 people and is part of the Bay City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Sterling was first settled in 1854 by a group of settlers from Sterling, Illinois. The village was originally known as "Sterling Station" due to its location on the Detroit, Bay City and Alpena Railroad. The village was officially incorporated in 1887 and the name was changed to Sterling.
Geography
Sterling is located at 43°45'N 83°45'W (43.75, -83.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Sterling's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station. The village also has a small marina on the Au Gres River.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,000 people, 393 households, and 279 families residing in the village. The population density was 833.3 people per square mile (322.2/km2). There were 431 housing units at an average density of 359.3 per square mile (139.1/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.30% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.10% from other races, and 1.50% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.90% of the population.
There were 393 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.7% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
