South Range Summary
Range, Michigan is a small village located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is situated in the western part of the state, near the Wisconsin border. The village is part of the Houghton County and is located in the township of South Range. The population of the village was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
Geography
South Range is located at 46°30′N 88°45′W (46.50, -88.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.
History
South Range was first settled in 1871 by a group of Finnish immigrants. The village was originally known as “Kivimaki”, which means “stone hill” in Finnish. The village was renamed South Range in 1887.
The village was incorporated in 1891 and was the first village in Houghton County to be incorporated. The village was named after the nearby South Range Hills, which are part of the Keweenaw Peninsula.
Economy
The economy of South Range is largely based on tourism and the local timber industry. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station.
The village is also home to a number of small farms, which produce a variety of crops, including potatoes, corn, and hay. The village is also home to a number of logging companies, which harvest timber from the surrounding forests.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,179.3 people per square mile (455.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 511.7 per square mile (197.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
