South Range Summary

Range, Michigan is a small village located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is situated in the western part of the state, near the Wisconsin border. The village is part of the Houghton County and is located in the township of South Range. The population of the village was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

Geography

South Range is located at 46°30′N 88°45′W (46.50, -88.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.

History

South Range was first settled in 1871 by a group of Finnish immigrants. The village was originally known as “Kivimaki”, which means “stone hill” in Finnish. The village was renamed South Range in 1887.
The village was incorporated in 1891 and was the first village in Houghton County to be incorporated. The village was named after the nearby South Range Hills, which are part of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Economy

The economy of South Range is largely based on tourism and the local timber industry. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station.
The village is also home to a number of small farms, which produce a variety of crops, including potatoes, corn, and hay. The village is also home to a number of logging companies, which harvest timber from the surrounding forests.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,179.3 people per square mile (455.3/km2).
