Saranac is a small village located in Ionia County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Saranac was first settled in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as "New York Settlement" and was later renamed "Saranac" after the Saranac River in New York. The village was incorporated in 1871.

Geography

Saranac is located at 42°54'45" North, 85°14'45" West (42.912500, -85.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Saranac's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bank. The village also has a post office and a library.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 617.2 per square mile (238.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
