Romulus Summary

Romulus, Michigan is a city located in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. It is located about 20 miles west of Detroit and is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 23,989.

History

Romulus was first settled in 1827 by John Burtch and his family. The area was originally known as Burtchville, but was later changed to Romulus in 1835. The name was chosen in honor of the mythical founder of Rome, Romulus. The area was incorporated as a village in 1864 and as a city in 1970.

Geography

Romulus is located at 42°14′N 83°21′W (42.23, -83.35). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (0.62%) is water.

Economy

Romulus is home to Detroit Metropolitan Airport, the largest airport in Michigan and one of the busiest airports in the United States. The airport is a major economic driver for the city, providing jobs and economic activity. Other major employers in the city include Ford Motor Company, which has a large manufacturing plant in the city, and the Romulus Assembly Plant, which produces automotive parts.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 23,989 people, 8,945 households, and 6,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,489.3 people per square mile (575.2/km2). There were 9,845 housing units at an average density of 609.7 per square mile (235.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 25.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
There were 8,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $48,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
