Republic Summary
Republic is a city located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. It is the county seat of Marquette County and is located on the south shore of Lake Superior. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Republic was first settled in the late 1800s by Finnish immigrants. The city was incorporated in 1891 and was named after the Republic of Finland. The city was originally a mining town, with the Republic Mine being the largest employer in the area. The mine closed in the late 1960s and the city has since become a bedroom community for the nearby cities of Marquette and Negaunee.
Geography
Republic is located at 46°37′N 87°37′W (46.619, -87.619). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Republic is largely based on tourism and services. The city is home to several restaurants, hotels, and other businesses that cater to tourists. The city is also home to a number of small manufacturing companies.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,072 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 890.2 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 391.2 per square mile (150.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
