Portland Summary
Portland is a city located in Ionia County, Michigan, United States. It is situated along the Grand River, approximately 25 miles east of Grand Rapids. The population was 3,734 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Portland was first settled in 1837 by a group of settlers from New York. The settlement was originally known as Grand Rapids Rapids, but was later renamed to Portland in 1839. The name was chosen to honor the city of Portland, Maine.
In 1844 the first post office was established in Portland The city was incorporated in 1859
In the late 19th century, Portland was a major lumbering center. The city was home to several sawmills and a large paper mill. The paper mill was the largest employer in the city until it closed in the early 20th century.
Geography
Portland is located at 42°53′N 85°14′W (42.88, -85.23). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Economy
Portland’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several food processing plants, including a Kellogg’s plant and a Nestle plant. The city is also home to several automotive parts suppliers.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 3,734 people, 1,541 households, and 990 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,711.2 people per square mile (661.2/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 783.2 per square mile (302.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 1,541 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
