Mason Summary
Mason is a city located in Ingham County, Michigan, United States. The population was 8,252 at the 2010 census. Mason is located in the Lansing metropolitan area and is part of the Lansing-East Lansing metropolitan statistical area.
History
Mason was first settled in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The settlement was originally known as "Thompsonville" after the first settler, William Thompson. The settlement was later renamed "Mason" after the first postmaster, John Mason. The city was incorporated in 1855.
Mason was an important stop on the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, which ran through the city from 1881 to 1971. The railroad was a major employer in the city and helped to spur economic growth.
Geography
Mason is located at 42°41'25" North, 84°27'45" West (42.690278, -84.462500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.

Mason is home to several large employers, including the Mason Public Schools, the Ingham County Health Department, and the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 8,252 people, 3,093 households, and 2,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,588.2 people per square mile (613.7/km2). There were 3,309 housing units at an average density of 637.2 per square mile (246.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,945. About 5.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
