Inkster Summary

Inkster, Michigan is a city located in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. It is a suburb of Detroit and is part of the Metro Detroit area. The population was 25,369 at the 2010 census.

History

Inkster was first settled in 1825 by John and Mary Inkster, who were of Scottish descent. The town was originally called "Inkster's Corners" and was incorporated as a village in 1926. The village was named after the Inkster family, who were among the first settlers in the area.
Inkster was a farming community until the 1950s, when it began to experience rapid growth due to the expansion of Detroit's auto industry. The city was incorporated as a city in 1964.

Geography

Inkster is located at 42°17'45" North, 83°20'45" West (42.295833, -83.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.

Economy

Inkster's economy is largely based on the automotive industry. The city is home to several automotive suppliers, including Lear Corporation, Magna International, and TRW Automotive. The city also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 25,369 people, 8,945 households, and 6,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,890.3 people per square mile (1,890.2/km2). There were 9,945 housing units at an average density of 1,921.3 per square mile (739.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 44.2% African American, 40.2% White, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 11.7% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.2% of the population.
There were 8,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.7% were married couples living together, 25.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.45.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $35,945. Males had a median income of $30,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,945.
