Hillman Summary

Hillman, Michigan is a small village located in Montmorency County in the northeastern part of the state. The village is situated on the banks of the Thunder Bay River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests. The population of Hillman was 1,093 as of the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Hillman was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as “New Germany”, and was later renamed Hillman in honor of the first postmaster, John Hillman. The village was officially incorporated in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Hillman was a thriving lumber town. The village was home to several sawmills, a grist mill, and a shingle mill. The lumber industry was the main source of employment for the residents of Hillman.
In the 1950s, the lumber industry began to decline, and the village began to transition to a more agricultural-based economy. Today, Hillman is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
