Gobles Summary
Gobles is a small village located in Van Buren County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Portage Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Gobles was founded in 1837 by John Goble, a settler from New York. The village was originally known as Goble's Corners, and was later shortened to Gobles. The village was incorporated in 1891.
Geography
Gobles is located at 42°19'25" North, 85°45'45" West (42.323750, -85.762501). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
Gobles is a small village with a limited economy. The main industries in the area are agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a few other small shops.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 902.2 people per square mile (348.7/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 388.3 per square mile (149.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.55% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females.
