Galien Summary
Galien is a small village located in Berrien County, Michigan, United States. It is situated on the Galien River, approximately 10 miles east of the city of Benton Harbor. The population of Galien was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Galien was first settled in 1831 by a group of settlers from New York. The settlement was originally known as Galienville, named after the Galien River. The village was platted in 1837 and incorporated as a village in 1867.
The village was an important stop on the Michigan Central Railroad, which ran through the village from 1871 to 1971. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the village, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people to and from the village.
Geography
Galien is located at 41°45'25" North, 86°30'45" West (41.756944, -86.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.

The economy of Galien is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay. The village also has several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,213.3 people per square mile (468.7/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 522.2 per square mile (201.6/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $25,000 for females.
