Gaines Summary

Gaines is a small village located in Genesee County, Michigan. It is situated on the banks of the Flint River, about 10 miles south of Flint. The village has a population of about 1,500 people and is part of the Flint Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Gaines was first settled in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as Gaines Corners, and was named after the Gaines family who owned the land. The village was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Gaines was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain mills, a sawmill, a cider mill, and a cheese factory. The village also had a post office, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
In the early 20th century, the village began to decline as the local economy shifted away from agriculture. The village was hit hard by the Great Depression, and many of the businesses closed.
