Dowling Summary

Dowling is a small unincorporated community located in Barry County, Michigan. It is situated in the northeast corner of the county, approximately 10 miles south of Hastings and 15 miles north of Battle Creek. The community is located on the banks of the Thornapple River, which flows through the area.

History

The area that is now Dowling was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from New York and New England. The first settlers were primarily farmers, and the area was known as “Dowling’s Corners”. The name was derived from the first settler, John Dowling, who arrived in the area in 1836.
In 1844, the first post office was established in the area, and the name was changed to Dowling. The post office was located in the home of the first postmaster, John Dowling.
In 1845, the first school was established in the area. The school was located in the home of the first teacher, Mary Dowling.
In 1848, the first church was established in the area. The church was located in the home of the first pastor, Rev. John Dowling.
In 1851, the first store was established in the area. The store was located in the home of the first storekeeper, John Dowling.
In 1853, the first sawmill was established in the area. The sawmill was located in the home of the first sawmill operator, John Dowling.
In 1854, the first grist mill was established in the area. The grist mill was located in the home of the first miller, John Dowling.
