Douglas Summary

Douglas is a small village located in the southwestern corner of Allegan County, Michigan. It is situated on the Kalamazoo River, approximately 10 miles north of the city of Saugatuck. The village has a population of 1,845 people, according to the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Douglas was first settled in 1834 by a group of Dutch immigrants. The village was originally known as “Klompen”, which is Dutch for “clogs”. The name was changed to Douglas in 1837, after the first postmaster, William Douglas.
The village was incorporated in 1867, and the first mayor was elected in 1868. The village was a popular tourist destination in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, due to its proximity to Lake Michigan and its many resorts.

Geography

Douglas is located in the southwestern corner of Allegan County, Michigan. It is situated on the Kalamazoo River, approximately 10 miles north of the city of Saugatuck. The village has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land.
The village is located in a rural area, with rolling hills and wooded areas. The terrain is generally flat, with some areas of higher elevation. The climate is humid continental, with warm summers and cold winters.

Economy

The economy of Douglas is largely based on tourism and agriculture. The village is home to several resorts and bed and breakfasts, which attract visitors from all over the world. The village also has several wineries, breweries, and distilleries, which are popular with tourists.
