Deerfield was first settled in 1837 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as “Deerfield Corners”, and was named after the abundance of deer in the area. The village was incorporated in 1867, and the first post office was established in 1868.
In the late 19th century, Deerfield was a thriving agricultural community, with a variety of crops being grown in the area. The village was also home to a number of sawmills, which provided lumber for the local economy.
