Davison is a city located in Genesee County, Michigan. It is a suburb of Flint and is located about 10 miles northwest of the city. The population of Davison was 5,536 at the 2010 census.

History

Davison was founded in 1842 by William Davison, a settler from New York. The city was originally known as Davisonville, but the name was changed to Davison in 1881. The city was incorporated in 1887.
Davison was a farming community until the early 1900s when the automobile industry began to take off in Flint. Many of the residents of Davison began to work in the factories in Flint, and the city began to grow.
In the 1950s, Davison began to experience a population boom as people moved out of Flint and into the suburbs. The population of Davison grew from 1,500 in 1950 to 5,536 in 2010.

Geography

Davison is located at 43°02'N 83°50'W (43.037, -83.831). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Davison's economy is largely based on the automotive industry. Many of the city's residents work in the factories in Flint. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 5,536 people, 2,093 households, and 1,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,323.2 people per square mile (510.7/km2). There were 2,309 housing units at an average density of 551.3 per square mile (212.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $51,944. Males had a median income of $41,944 versus $27,917 for females.
