Caspian Summary

Caspian is a small city located in Iron County, Michigan, United States. It is situated on the western shore of Lake Superior, about 25 miles south of Ironwood. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Caspian was founded in 1887 by the Caspian Mining Company. The company was formed by a group of investors from Chicago, Illinois, who were looking to capitalize on the area’s rich iron ore deposits. The town was named after the Caspian Sea, which is located between Europe and Asia.
The town quickly grew, and by the early 1900s, it had become a bustling mining town. The Caspian Mining Company operated several mines in the area, and the town was home to a number of businesses, including a hotel, a bank, a general store, and a post office.
In the 1920s, the mining industry began to decline, and the town’s population began to dwindle. By the 1950s, the town was nearly abandoned. In the 1960s, the town was revitalized by the construction of a paper mill, which provided jobs for many of the town’s residents.

Geography

Caspian is located at 46°25′N 88°45′W (46.4133, -88.7500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
