History

Carsonville was founded in 1854 by William Carson, a lumberman from Canada. He purchased the land from the government and began to build a sawmill and a gristmill. The village was named after him and was incorporated in 1871.
In the late 19th century, Carsonville was a thriving lumber town. The sawmill and gristmill provided employment for many of the residents. The village also had a blacksmith, a general store, a post office, and a school.
In the early 20th century, the lumber industry began to decline and the village began to suffer economically. The sawmill and gristmill closed and many of the residents moved away. The village was able to survive, however, due to its proximity to Port Sanilac and the Black River.
