Buchanan is a small city located in Berrien County, Michigan. It is situated on the banks of the St. Joseph River, approximately 10 miles east of Lake Michigan. The city has a population of 4,456 as of the 2010 census, making it the second largest city in the county.

History

Buchanan was founded in 1833 by a group of settlers from New York. The city was named after James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States. The city was incorporated in 1867 and has since grown to become the second largest city in Berrien County.

Geography

Buchanan is located at 41°52'N 86°20'W (41.867, -86.333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Buchanan is home to several industries, including manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. The city is home to the Whirlpool Corporation, which is the largest employer in the city. Other major employers include the Buchanan Public Schools, the Berrien County Sheriff's Office, and the Buchanan Area Chamber of Commerce.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 4,456 people, 1,845 households, and 1,093 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,945.2 people per square mile (750.2/km2). There were 2,039 housing units at an average density of 890.2 per square mile (344.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.3% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
