Birch Run is a village located in Saginaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. The village is located within Birch Run Township.

History

The area that is now Birch Run was first settled in 1836 by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as "Brunnerville" and was later renamed "Birch Run" after the nearby Birch Run Creek. The village was incorporated in 1887.

Geography

Birch Run is located at 43°20'25" North, 84°0'25" West (43.340278, -84.006944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Birch Run is home to several businesses, including a variety of restaurants, retail stores, and a large outlet mall. The outlet mall, Birch Run Premium Outlets, is the largest outlet mall in the state of Michigan and attracts visitors from all over the state.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (593.7/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 674.2 per square mile (260.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
