Athens Summary

Athens is a small village located in Calhoun County, Michigan, United States. The village is situated on the Kalamazoo River, approximately 10 miles east of Battle Creek. The population of Athens was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Athens was first settled in 1831 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as "Athensville" and was later changed to "Athens" in 1837. The village was incorporated in 1867.
Athens was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many of the settlers being abolitionists. The village was also home to a number of prominent abolitionists, including William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass.

Geography

Athens is located at 42°17'45"N 85°14'45"W (42.295833, -85.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Athens is a small village with a limited economy. The village is home to a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The village also has a few small manufacturing companies.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 675.8 per square mile (261.2/km2).
