Alma Summary

Alma is a city located in Gratiot County, Michigan, United States. The population was 9,383 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gratiot County. The city is located within Alma Township, but is politically independent.

History

Alma was founded in 1853 by James and Mary Ann Maitland. The Maitlands named the city after their daughter, Alma. The city was incorporated in 1872.
Alma was a major lumber town in the late 19th century. The city was home to several sawmills and a large shingle mill. The lumber industry declined in the early 20th century, and the city shifted its focus to agriculture.

Geography

Alma is located at 43°30′N 84°37′W (43.50, -84.62). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.50 square miles (11.67 km2), all land.

Economy

Alma's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several large farms, including the Alma Dairy Farm, which is one of the largest dairy farms in the state. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including Alma Products, which produces automotive parts, and Alma Plastics, which produces plastic products.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 9,383 people, 3,845 households, and 2,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,084.2 people per square mile (805.2/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 909.3 per square mile (351.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,813, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,945.
