Albion Summary
Albion is a city located in Calhoun County, Michigan, United States. It is situated in the south-central part of the state, about 15 miles east of Battle Creek and 25 miles west of Jackson. The population of Albion was 8,616 at the 2010 census.
History
Albion was founded in 1835 by settlers from New York and New England. The city was named after the ancient city of Albion, which was the poetic name for Great Britain. The first settlers were primarily of English and Scottish descent.
The city was incorporated in 1838 and was the first incorporated city in Calhoun County. In 1843, Albion College was founded, making it the first college in Michigan. The college has since become a major educational institution in the area.
In the late 19th century, Albion was a major center for the manufacture of agricultural implements. The city was also home to several major industries, including a foundry, a paper mill, and a furniture factory.
Geography
Albion is located at 42°17'N 84°44'W (42.2833, -84.7333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Albion's economy is largely based on manufacturing and agriculture. The city is home to several major employers, including Albion Industries, a manufacturer of agricultural implements, and Albion Foundry, a manufacturer of castings. As of the 2010 census, there were 8,616 people, 3,521 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,053.2 people per square mile (793.2/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 945.2 per square mile (364.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 84.2% White, 9.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.3% of the population.
There were 3,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 14.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,944, and the median income for a family was $40,945. Males had a median income of $31,944 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,945. About 11.2% of families and 15.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
