Baltic Summary

Baltic is a town located in New London County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 2,099 at the 2010 census. The town is located in the southeastern corner of the county, bordered by the towns of Montville to the north, Lisbon to the east, and Griswold to the south.

History

The area that is now the town of Baltic was originally part of the Mohegan Indian Reservation. The Mohegans were granted the land in 1659 by the English colonists in exchange for their assistance in the Pequot War. The Mohegans sold the land to the colonists in 1717, and it was incorporated as the town of Baltic in 1786.
The town was named after the Baltic Sea, which was a major trading route for the colonists. The town was originally a farming community, but it later became a center for the production of woolen goods. The town was also home to several mills, including a paper mill, a grist mill, and a saw mill.

Geography

Baltic is located in southeastern New London County, bordered by the towns of Montville to the north, Lisbon to the east, and Griswold to the south. The town is located on the Quinebaug River, which flows through the center of town. The town is mostly rural, with a few small villages scattered throughout.
The town has a total area of 16.2 square miles, of which 16.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water. The highest point in the town is the summit of Baltic Hill, which has an elevation of 590 feet above sea level.

Economy

The economy of Baltic is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, hay, and vegetables.
