Suffolk Summary

Suffolk is an independent city located in the Hampton Roads region of southeastern Virginia. It is the largest city in the region and the 14th largest in the state. History

Suffolk was founded in 1742 as a port town on the Nansemond River. The city was named after the county of Suffolk in England. The city was initially a tobacco trading center and was home to a number of plantations. During the American Revolution, the city was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Great Bridge in 1775.
In the 19th century, Suffolk became an important center for the production of naval stores, such as turpentine and rosin. The city was also a major center for the production of peanuts and peanut products. In the early 20th century, Suffolk was a major center for the production of textiles.

Geography

Suffolk is located in southeastern Virginia, in the Hampton Roads region. The city is situated on the Nansemond River, which flows into the Chesapeake Bay. Suffolk is bordered by the cities of Chesapeake to the north, Portsmouth to the south, and Virginia Beach to the east. The city covers an area of approximately 200 square miles and has a population of approximately 90,000.
