Staunton was founded in 1747 by Thomas Lewis and John Lewis, two brothers from Wales. The city was named after Lady Rebecca Staunton, the wife of Thomas Lewis. The city was originally a trading post and a stop on the Great Wagon Road, which connected the Shenandoah Valley to the Tidewater region of Virginia.
During the Civil War, Staunton was a major supply center for the Confederate Army. The city was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Staunton River Bridge in 1864. After the war, the city experienced a period of economic growth and prosperity.

Staunton is located in the Shenandoah Valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The city is situated at the intersection of Interstate 81 and Interstate 64, and is approximately two hours from Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia.
The city has a total area of 10.3 square miles, of which 10.2 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water. The city is located at the confluence of the Middle River and the South River, and is surrounded by the George Washington National Forest.
