Saltville Summary

Saltville is a town located in Smyth County, Virginia, United States. It is part of the Kingsport–Bristol (TN)–Bristol (VA) Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region. The population was 2,077 at the 2010 census.

History

Saltville was first settled in 1750 by James Patton, a Scots-Irish immigrant. The town was named for the salt marshes that were located nearby. Salt was an important commodity in the area, and the town became a major producer of salt during the Civil War. In 1864, the town was the site of the Battle of Saltville, a Confederate victory.
In the late 19th century, the town became a major center for coal mining. The coal industry declined in the early 20th century, and the town's population began to decline. In the 1950s, the town was revitalized with the construction of a new highway and the opening of a new industrial park.

Saltville is located at 36°51'25" North, 81°37'17" West (36.856944, -81.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
