Salem Summary

History

The area that is now Salem was first settled in 1766 by William and Mary Miller, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was originally known as Big Lick, named for a large salt lick located nearby. In 1802, the town was renamed Salem after the Hebrew word for peace.
The town was incorporated in 1802 and became a major center for trade and commerce in the region. The town was also a major stop on the Great Wagon Road, which connected the Shenandoah Valley to the Piedmont region of North Carolina.
In the mid-19th century, Salem became a major hub for the railroad industry. The Norfolk and Western Railway was built through the town in 1881, connecting it to the rest of the country. The railroad industry helped to spur the growth of the town, and by the early 20th century, Salem had become a major industrial center.
