The town is located in the Piedmont region of Virginia, which is characterized by rolling hills and valleys. The town is situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and is surrounded by the Bull Run Mountains to the north and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the south.

Marshall has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 57°F (14°C). The average annual precipitation is 43.3 inches (110 cm).
