Lyndhurst Summary

Lyndhurst is a small unincorporated community located in Rockingham County, Virginia. It is situated in the Shenandoah Valley, approximately 10 miles south of Harrisonburg and 25 miles north of Staunton. The population of Lyndhurst was estimated to be around 1,000 in 2020.

History

Lyndhurst was first settled in the late 1700s by German immigrants. The town was originally known as “New Berlin” and was later renamed “Lyndhurst” in honor of the Lyndhurst family, who were prominent landowners in the area. The town was officially incorporated in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Lyndhurst was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several farms, a general store, a post office, a blacksmith shop, and a school. The town also had a railroad station, which connected it to the larger cities of Harrisonburg and Staunton.
In the mid-1900s, the town began to decline as many of its residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities. The railroad station closed in the 1950s and the post office closed in the 1970s.
