History
Dillwyn was founded in 1798 by William and Mary Dillwyn, who named the town after their son, Dillwyn. The town was incorporated in 1819.
Dillwyn was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1864. The Battle of Dillwyn was fought between Union and Confederate forces, and resulted in a Confederate victory.

The economy of Dillwyn is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a number of small businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,077 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 476 housing units at an average density of 676.2 per square mile (262.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.45% White, 19.17% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.93% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
