Danville Summary
Danville, Virginia is a city located in the south-central part of the state, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is the county seat of Pittsylvania County and is part of the Danville, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has a population of 43,055 as of the 2010 census, making it the fifth-largest city in Virginia.
History
The area that is now Danville was first settled in 1793 by William and John Lynch, who established a ferry across the Dan River. The town was officially established in 1793 and was named after Daniel Lynch, the father of the two brothers. The town quickly grew and by 1833, it had become a major trading center for the region.
During the Civil War, Danville was a major Confederate supply center and was the site of several battles. In April 1865, the Confederate government evacuated the city and the Union Army occupied it. After the war, the city was rebuilt and the economy was revitalized.

Danville is located in south-central Virginia, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is situated on the Dan River, which forms the border between Pittsylvania County and Caswell County, North Carolina. The city has a total area of 24.2 square miles, of which 24.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.
The city is located in the humid subtropical climate zone, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 57.2°F, with an average high of 73.2°F in July and an average low of 41.2°F in January. The average annual precipitation is 44.3 inches.
Economy
Danville’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and healthcare. The city is home to several major employers, including Dan River Inc., Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, and Danville Regional Medical Center. The city also has a thriving tourism industry, with attractions such as the Danville Science Center, the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, and the Danville Historic District.

The racial makeup of the city was 57.2% White, 37.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
