Courtland Summary

History

Courtland, Virginia is a small town located in Southampton County, Virginia. It was founded in 1750 and is the oldest town in the county. The town was named after the Courtland family, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was originally a trading post and was a major stop on the stagecoach route between Norfolk and Petersburg.
In the early 1800s, Courtland became a major center for the production of tobacco.
