History
Clintwood was established in 1891 and named after William Clinton, a local landowner. The town was incorporated in 1892. The town was originally known as "Clintwood Station" due to its location on the Norfolk and Western Railway.
The town was the site of a major coal mining operation in the early 20th century. The coal industry was the primary source of employment for the town's residents. The town was also home to a number of other businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, and a general store.

The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 0.76% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
