Winona Summary

Winona, Texas is a small town located in Smith County, Texas, United States. It is situated about 10 miles east of Tyler, the county seat. The population of Winona was 1,717 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Winona was first settled in the early 1840s by a group of settlers from Alabama. The town was originally known as "Cotton Gin Port" due to the presence of a cotton gin in the area. In 1872, the town was renamed Winona after the daughter of one of the settlers.
The town was officially incorporated in 1876 and the first post office was established in 1877. The town grew slowly but steadily over the years, and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving agricultural center.

Geography

Winona is located at 32°14'25" North, 95°20'17" West (32.240278, -95.338333). It is situated in the eastern part of Smith County, about 10 miles east of Tyler, the county seat.
The town has a total area of 1.3 square miles, all of which is land. Winona is located in the Piney Woods region of East Texas, and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests.

The economy of Winona is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms and ranches, and the surrounding area is known for its production of cotton, soybeans, and other crops.
