Whitesboro Summary

Whitesboro is a city located in Grayson County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,793 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sherman–Denison Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Whitesboro was founded in 1872 by a group of settlers from Kentucky, led by William A. White. The town was named after White, who was a prominent local businessman and politician. The town was incorporated in 1876.

Geography

Whitesboro is located at 33°41'25"N 96°41'45"W (33.690278, -96.695833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Whitesboro is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large manufacturing plants, including a Tyson Foods poultry processing plant, a Cargill beef processing plant, and a Pilgrim's Pride poultry processing plant. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,541 people, 1,364 households, and 945 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,619.2 people per square mile (625.2/km2). There were 1,521 housing units at an average density of 693.2 per square mile (267.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.45% White, 0.17% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 6.17% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.90% of the population.
There were 1,364 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
