History

West Tawakoni was founded in the late 1800s as a small farming community. The town was originally known as "Tawakoni," but the name was changed to "West Tawakoni" in the early 1900s to distinguish it from the nearby town of East Tawakoni.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 517 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,420.3 people per square mile (548.3/km²). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 609.2 per square mile (234.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 87.90% White, 8.45% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.59% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.45% of the population.
There were 717 households out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
